Encouraging Responsible Business in Myanmar

Vicky is the head of the Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business, which she set up in 2013. She will talk about the activities of the Centre during its first two years, which have focused on oil and gas, tourism, information and communication technology, and on promoting greater transparency.

  Vintage Photographs of Myanmar

These were extraordinary photos of Myanmar, taken from 1852 onwards, and included early views of Yangon and Mandalay, as well as tribal people in remote parts of the country. Barbara Harding has herself travelled and taken photographs in Myanmar, and was able to talk about some of the difficulties to overcome.

Ros Russell talked about her book, "Burma's Spring", based upon people she met during her difficult assignment from 2008 to 2012 as a reporter for the Independent in Myanmar. She described the impact of recent political reforms through people she interviewed.

The Evolution of Myanmar Paintings from the 11th Century to the present day

at the London School of Oriental and African Studies.
This meeting featured the leading Myanmar artist U Thant Sin, a specialist in water colour.
U Thant Sin talked about the evolution of Myanmar paintings from the 11th century to the present day.
U Thant Sin won a scholarship to study in France in 1980s at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts, and his Myanmar paintings are influenced by French Impressionism. He has exhibited in many countries but for the first time, the BBS had the opportunity of meeting an artist of such standing, portraying Myanmar traditional life and culture in paintings.

The Jews in Myanmar

Saul Zadka visited Myanmar three years ago with the main intention of seeing the magnificent city of Bagan, but ended up with the discovery that two of his relatives are buried in the Jewish Cemetery of Yangon. Such a revelation led him to research the history of a tiny community that originated in Iraq during the second half of the 19th century in the footsteps of the British Empire.

The October Reception
Our new season of meetings is about to begin and we start as usual with our traditional October Reception. Our President, Robert Gordon, with his wife Pam, will be there to meet and greet old friends and their guests, and welcome new members. The evening will be a largely social event but will again be the occasion of our Annual General Meeting.
